The $5,000 AI Billing Story

🧵 I've spent $5,000+ on AI this year. Here's what I learned about how they're billing you...

1/ 62% of IT leaders cite "difficulty predicting monthly costs" as their top AI concern (Gartner). I'm one of them. AI companies charge you for THEIR mistakes. When Claude hallucinates code that doesn't work, you pay for the broken output AND the fix.

2/ Token prices dropped 99% since 2023. Great news, right? WRONG. Total bills are RISING because consumption explodes. Context bloat adds $1.80-$3.20 infrastructure cost per $1 spent on AI licenses (Alan Turing Institute).

3/ There's no transparency. My invoice says "47,000 tokens used" but I have no idea what that means in dollars. No breakdown by project. No way to see which tasks cost the most. It's like getting a credit card bill that just says "You spent money."

4/ When AI loses context mid-task (which happens constantly), you start over from scratch. And pay again. Full price. For work you already paid for once.

5/ Power users get... bots. I spend thousands monthly and when something breaks, I wait 11+ days for a form letter response. Meanwhile enterprise customers get account managers. We're second-class citizens.

6/ The principal-agency problem: AI companies PROFIT when you use tokens inefficiently. So where's their incentive to teach you efficiency? Gambling sites warn "When the fun stops, stop." AI platforms? Silence.

7/ I wrote the first colocation SLA in 1996 for Exodus Communications. I helped create the 95/5 billing model. I've built SLAs for Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon, Sun Microsystems. I know what fair billing looks like. This isn't it.

8/ But here's the thing: I LOVE these tools. Maybe more than anyone on Earth. Claude is extraordinary when it works. That's why this hurts. I'm not a hater—I'm their biggest fan, heartbroken that billing practices are undermining the magic.

9/ The solution isn't complicated: Automatic service credits. Transparent billing dashboards. Human support for power users. Volume discounts. The same accountability every other SaaS platform provides.

10/ Blockbuster made $800M/year from late fees. Netflix offered partnership instead. Blockbuster is dead. Netflix is worth $392B. AI companies are at the same crossroads.

11/ This isn't about anger. It's about hope. Hope that @anthropic @Meta @OpenAI @elonmusk @xAI will choose partnership over extraction. That they'll become legendary not just for what they build, but for how they treat people.

12/ I built a full manifesto with 10 commitments AI companies can make to build unshakeable trust. It's written with love, not rage.

13/ Read it here: [YOUR_SITE_URL]

Because the companies that win the AI race won't be the ones that extract the most from each customer. They'll be the ones customers trust enough to build their futures on.

The $749 Downgrade Fee Absurdity

🧵 @Meta charged me $749 to DOWNGRADE my Manus account. Let that sink in.

1/ I tried to reduce my plan from unlimited to 40,000 credits/month. A downgrade. Less service. Less cost. Right?

2/ Wrong. The system demanded a $749 "upgrade fee" to process the downgrade. I have video proof: [LOOM_URL]

3/ It's been 11 days. No human response. Just bots. Meanwhile, my business account is suspended.

4/ Here's the irony: 50% of AI providers lack consensus on GenAI pricing models (ComplexDiscovery). But charging customers to REDUCE service? That's not "experimental pricing." That's extraction.

5/ This is the same Meta that acquired WhatsApp for $22B and made it free to build trust. @zuck learned that lesson once. Why not apply it to AI?

6/ I'm not asking for charity. I'm asking for basic fairness. The kind of fairness Meta showed WhatsApp users. The kind that builds empires.

7 Questions AI Companies Can't Answer

🧵 7 questions AI companies don't want to answer (but customers are asking):

1/ If your AI can detect code errors in milliseconds, why can't it detect its own billing errors?

2/ Would you pay full price at a restaurant that charged you for burnt food?

3/ If you profit when customers use tokens inefficiently, where's your incentive to teach efficiency? (Hint: AI pricing can tacitly collude to raise prices - Carnegie Mellon, 2025)

4/ Why do I need a PhD in prompt engineering to avoid wasting money? 62% of IT leaders can't predict monthly costs (Gartner).

5/ If I spend $5,000/month, why can't I talk to a human in less than 11 days?

6/ Why are you repeating Blockbuster's mistake? (They made $800M/year from late fees. Netflix offered partnership. Blockbuster is dead.)

7/ Token prices dropped 99% since 2023, so why are my bills RISING? Context bloat adds $1.80-$3.20 per $1 spent (Alan Turing Institute).

8/ What happens when someone builds the AI platform that DOES offer transparency and fairness?

Your moat isn't technology—it's trust. And trust erodes faster than it builds.

@anthropic Why am I charged for hallucinations? When Claude generates broken code, I pay for the error AND the fix. Where's my service credit?

@Meta @zuck Manus charged me $749 to DOWNGRADE. 11 days, no human response. Is this the WhatsApp playbook?

@OpenAI @sama If AWS taught customers to optimize EC2 and grew, why won't you teach token efficiency?

After 25 years building SLAs for Microsoft, AT&T, and Verizon, here's why AI billing is broken...
